ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Patricia “Pat” Short Makris was born and raised at Sewanee, Tennessee.  She attended Sewanee Public School, Jump Off Public School, and graduated from Franklin County High School.  Her BARNES family roots at Sewanee go back to the days of the Indians, when the mountain was known as “The Nation.”  Her SHORT family roots have been traced from England to Virginia, arriving there in 1634.  The Shorts came to Franklin County in the early 1850’s to work on the railroad.  They helped build the first railroad up the mountain at Cowan, Tennessee.

Pat has written four family history books.  "MY GREEK CONNECTION" is based on her husband’s Greek ancestors.  "A JOURNEY THROUGH HISTORY WITH THE SHORT AND BARNES FAMILIES" is about her father’s family.  "DESCENDANTS OF HENRY SULLIVAN" was written about her Irish roots in America.  The "PASSONS’ FAMILY CONNECTIONS" is based on her mother’s maternal side of the family.   Major Passons, the main ancestor in the Passons’ book, served in the War of 1812 with Davy Crockett.  Major and Davy were part of Major William Russell’s Company of Mounted Spies from Franklin County, Tennessee.  They fought on horseback, and served as scouts for General Andrew Jackson’s Tennessee Volunteers.  Pat wrote "THE OTHER SIDE OF SEWANEE".  In 1999, she wrote a follow-up to "THE OTHER SIDE OF SEWANEE" called "SEWANEE – ECHOES OF ITS PAST".  This book has additional stories about Sewanee and the families that helped establish it as a community.  In 1999, she published "EARLY EPISCOPAL CHURCH RECORDS," which are transcriptions of old Sewanee Episcopal church records from 1872 to 1944.  In 2006, "SEWANEE – PEOPLE, PLACES AND TIMES", was published and includes many firsthand diary entries from soldiers that were in the Sewanee, Tennessee area around 1863, during the Civil War.
